Spring cleaning doesn’t just apply to your baseboards, tile grout and linen closet. It’s also a great time for a quick check of your home security.
Here are four safety checks that QEI Security & Technology recommends you do annually:
1. Check smoke detector batteries.
Change your smoke detector (and carbon monoxide detector) batteries annually – then you never have to worry about the low battery beep in the middle of the night! If your smoke detectors are more than 10 years old, they should be replaced. If you just moved into a new home that is more than 10 years old, it is a good idea to replace all smoke detectors.
2. Test your security system.
Our monitoring station will always notify you if they are not receiving a signal from your alarm system, but it’s still a good idea to check it.
To do that, give us a call at 843-553-7576 and ask for your system to be put into test mode. This is VERY important – if your system is not in test, then emergency personnel will be dispatched. Then set your system off by opening a door or widow. Let the alarm go off for 15-30 seconds to ensure the signal was submitted. Call QEI Security & Technology back to make sure the alarm signal was received and to take your system out of test mode.
3. Check window and door locks.
Walk around to all windows and doors and ensure the locks are working properly.
If you have a smart home system, consider adding remote door locks that can be controlled through your security system.
4. Talk to your kids (or grandkids!) about safety.
When was the last time you reviewed your fire escape route with your kids?
Spring cleaning is a great time to have another conversation about safety. Remind them not to answer the door without an adult and to lock the door and set the alarm when they come inside.
See if your kids can remember the fire escape route, locate the first aid kit and identify the panic button on the security system.
